Reiki
Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is a Japanese healing art that supports the body’s natural ability to restore balance and calm.
The word combines two Japanese terms: “Rei” meaning “universal life” and “Ki” meaning “vital energy.” Together, Reiki translates to universal life energy — the subtle, restorative current that flows through all living beings.
At Calm and Centered Counseling, we offer a trauma-informed, hands-off Reiki experience designed for safety, relaxation, and nervous system regulation. Rather than physical touch, energy is gently directed or “beamed” a few inches above the body, allowing clients to experience deep relaxation without contact.
How Reiki Works
Reiki operates on the principle that emotional or physical stress can disrupt the body’s energetic flow.
By guiding this life force energy with intention, Reiki helps restore harmony within the body and mind. Clients often describe the experience as a gentle warmth, wave-like sensation, or peaceful stillness that brings clarity and ease.
Although Reiki is not a substitute for medical or psychological treatment, it serves as a complementary wellness practice that helps calm the nervous system, support emotional healing, and encourage the body’s natural self-repair processes.
Integrating Reiki with Psychotherapy
When integrated with psychotherapy, Reiki can deepen emotional work by helping clients enter a grounded, receptive state where insight and healing can occur more naturally.
Nervous system regulation
Reiki promotes relaxation and reduces physiological arousal, supporting trauma recovery and anxiety reduction.
Emotional processing
Many clients find it easier to release stored emotional tension and reconnect with feelings in a safe, contained way.
Mind-body connection
Reiki helps clients gently rebuild trust in their bodies and fosters somatic awareness, which is essential for trauma-informed care.
Enhanced mindfulness
The calm, meditative state experienced during Reiki sessions promotes greater self-attunement, compassion, and presence.
This integration honors the whole person — mind, body, and spirit — aligning with our holistic mission to support clients in achieving lasting balance and wellbeing.
What to Expect During a Reiki Session
Each Reiki session at Calm and Centered Counseling is one hour in duration and begins with a brief check-in between the client and practitioner. During this time, the practitioner gathers information about your physical, emotional, or energetic needs for the day to guide the session’s intention.
You’ll then be invited to relax — typically lying fully clothed on a massage table or seated comfortably in a chair. The environment is calm and supportive, with low lighting, soothing music, and an emphasis on grounding and emotional safety. Our hands-off approach means energy is directed above the body, allowing you to rest without physical contact.
The Reiki portion of the session usually lasts 40–45 minutes, during which clients often experience sensations of warmth, tingling, gentle waves of energy, or a profound sense of calm.
At the end of the session, your practitioner will take a few minutes to share observations, insights, and recommendations for continued grounding or integration between sessions. This reflective closing supports the therapeutic process and helps clients carry the benefits of Reiki into daily life.
Our Approach
Our Reiki practitioners are trained in both clinical and energetic awareness, ensuring each session is trauma-informed, ethical, and individualized. We maintain clear boundaries between Reiki and psychotherapy while offering them in complementary ways to enhance overall wellbeing.
Reiki is not a replacement for medical or psychological care but a gentle addition to your healing journey — one that nurtures peace, balance, and connection from the inside out.
